For a decade and a half we have been helping kids, youth, and families in Cape Breton who are struggling with poverty and lack of opportunity.

We have set a goal to help cover the expense of 250 kids and youth to be in weekly mentor-ship / life-skills programs. This number represents just 10% of the kids and youth in Glace Bay and New Waterford who are presently living in poverty.

A new large scale Community Hub is being built in New Waterford which will be the future home of Undercurrent Family Centre in that community. However, we are moving into a short term facility before the end of the year. hike4cbkids is your opportunity to help create a better future for some very deserving children and youth.

I (Dave Sawler) am committing to walking/hiking 3 million steps.

I am committing to do 35 Cape Breton Mountain and Trail Hikes. In the spring I will be hiking Duarte Peak (largest mountain in Caribbean), and then this adventure will end at Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania (largest mountain in Africa, in July. This journey will take me to 3 million+ steps. The distance between New Waterford / Glace Bay and Mount Kilimanjaro is 10,810 km or 13 Million steps. I know there are others who have a deep concern for the kids and youth on our Island. Together, we are looking for enough individuals and groups to collectively do 10 Million steps during the same period. So together we can walk the distance to the mountain.

We are looking for individuals who will commit to raise $480, the cost of sponsoring one child /youth per year. We want you to walk, hike, bike or whatever you need to do to gain sponsors for your own walks. This can be a one time event, or individuals can get sponsored for how many hikes you do.

We are looking for organizations, groups, businesses to arrange groups to do a hike4kids and raise the funds for multiple kids / youth.

*You can Register your own Hike HERE.

Perhaps you cannot hike yourself, but you would want to sponsor a youth. We can help you do that. Click on the SPONSOR link below.

We are and we want to promote active living. We also love Cape Breton and want to see as many people as possible enjoying our trails, mountains, beaches, and incredible scenery.

We are going to use the hashtag #hike4cbkids so everyone can post their hiking trips and adventures. This is an ambitious adventure, but together, we can help change the future of so very deserving young people.
